Seafarers’ Bulletin

Dear friends,
The pressures of life at sea can have enormous impacts on the mental wellbeing of the world’s seafarers. Seafarers’ Bulletin shows how the ITF is driving change globally in the industry, through work on maritime education, partnering with governments, and opening up conversations with seafarers on ships, in ports, and with their families.
The continuing rise in the number of seafarers being accused of crimes without evidence has led to important new protections against criminalisation and unfair treatment. We set out your new rights if you are accused of a crime, and illustrate how we are working with the International Chamber of Shipping and the International Maritime Organization to tackle this issue.
This year we’ve been deeply troubled to see another record number of abandonments. Read how to protect yourself from being abandoned, why you must act quickly, and where to turn for help.
We also share the ITF’s exposé of a global scam involving fake union the ‘International Seafarers’ Union’ and a for-profit company called ‘Lanibra’ to make money at the direct expense of seafarers’ rights, safety and wages.
The stories from some of our inspectors about the cases they handled in 2025 are often harrowing. These cases illustrate both the callousness with which seafarers are treated and the power to resolve them through persistent, coordinated efforts between inspectors, unions and port authorities.
Seafarers’ Bulletin introduces the two newest ITF inspectors, shines a spotlight on our team of inspectors in Australia, and shares updates on the activities of our expanding Flag of Convenience networks, which help you where there are no inspectors.
You will find all the essential information you need – how to contact an ITF inspector and how they can help you, together with advice on contracts, your legal rights and avoiding scams – in the 12-page pullout section.
In solidarity,
Stephen Cotton
ITF General Secretary
