Deputy Majority Leader and ACT-CIS Rep. Erwin Tulfo wants the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) to make sure that Filipino seafarers and other professionals sign contracts wherein their salaries would be similar to what is being received by other nationalities.

Captain Luc Grandcourt: Meeting one of Seychelles’ bravest seafarers

(Seychelles News Agency) – Luc Grandcourt, a recipient of the Seychelles’ Medal of Honour in June 2023, is a retired seafarer, who at a very young age, decided to follow in his father’s footsteps as a sailor.

Grandcourt received the award for his bravery and quick thinking, which helped to save the lives of 22 passengers on board the schooner ‘Ero’ from Praslin to Mahe, when it capsized and sank on August 12, 1975. He was 27 years old at the time.

MLC amendments to be incorporated into UK law

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) has issued a document explaining how the UK proposes to implement amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) which were agreed in June 2022. The MLC, sometimes referred to as the ‘Seafarers Bill of Rights’, lays out the basic entitlements for seafarers internationally. The MLC is a living document that is regularly amended with the participation of labour, government and industry representatives.

CMA CGM has continued to operate Red Sea vessel rotations despite rebel attacks on Mideast trade route. At least one major container carrier has continued to operate in the Red Sea despite a monthslong campaign of violent attacks on the key global shipping route that has forced other lines to divert around Africa.

Ukrainian Court Orders Sale of Russian Tanker Involved in 2018 Incident

Ukraine’s Asset Recovery and Management Agency (ARMA) responsible for seized assets during the war reports it has received court authority to proceed with the sale of a Russian tanker Ukraine has detained since 2019. The product tanker, which was involved in an incident pre-dating the February 2022 invasion, will be sold to provide funds for the Ukrainian defense efforts.

Transport Malta Investigation: Crew member injured during maintenance

Transport Malta’s Marine Safety Investigation Unit has issued an investigation report into an incident where a third engineer on a container vessel was seriously injured in the engine room. On 21 October 2023, whilst the container vessel CMA CGM San Antonio was alongside a layby berth at Jebel Ali, one of the two third engineers was seriously injured in the engine-room during the untightening process of main engine cylinder head no. 5.

Four Seafarers from Dutch Dredging Vessels Charged over Singapore Bunker Spill

Four seafarers of a Dutch dredging vessel have been charged over a collision that caused a large bunker spill in Singapore earlier this year. The dredger Vox Maxima ran into the stationary bunker vessel Marine Honour at the Pasir Panjang Terminal on June 14, resulting in a spill of about 400 mt of VLSFO.

THE parameters for the third doctor consultation under the newly signed Magna Carta for Filipino Seafarers will lessen the chance of claimants to receive favorable decisions in compensation cases. The provision on Determination of Disability Grading or Fitness to Work (Section 57) indicated that “the third doctor’s assessment shall strictly adhere to the Schedule of Disabilities as provided in the Standard Employment Contract (SEC) or the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), as warranted.”

Search underway for crew member missing from bulk carrier ship Double Delight off Newcastle

A search is underway for a crew member missing from bulk carrier Double Delight, south of Newcastle in New South Wales. Two Marine Rescue NSW vessels were tasked by Police Marine Area Command at 12pm today to search for the person.

The region’s rescue helicopter has joined the search from the air with assistance from a chopper specialising in defence force rescues.

Fake AIS trails and forged Iraqi documents underpin Iranian gas exports to Bangladesh

Small gas carriers are manipulating their AIS to ostensibly look as if loading in Khor al Zubair or Basrah anchorage. Iranian LPG is being mislabelled as Iraqi ahead of delivery to Bangladesh, while ships involved in the trade routinely fake their AIS signal to appear as if they’ve loaded in Khor al Zubair.
